Opened in September 2021 at the Mall of the Emirates, Carrefour City Plus is the first point of sale from Majid Al Futtaim with a fully automated checkout.
This convenience store, that reminds the Amazon Go concept launched in 2018 in the USA, is a concentrate of technology in a strategical area.
The technology to serve the experience
- To discover the concept, you first need to install the MAF Carrefour Online Shopping app (Apple store / Google play) which is the same for e-commerce purchases and delivery
- Then, you will need to go to the App menu and select ‘city+’ to access the functionalities and get information about this checkout-free experience
- It is required to have an account and add your payment card details
- Once these steps are completed, you just need to scan your access code at a store entrance gate and start your shopping. Up to 3 people can shop at the same time with only one account
- When you have picked up all the articles you want to purchase, you can leave the store without any additional step
- After 5 or 10 minutes the transaction is debited and an invoice is sent to your email address
- Almost 100 cameras fixed to the ceiling and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology (algorithms and machine learning) from the Californian startup Aifi will detect your body shape and follow your customer journey
- Your face will not be recorded and the video images will only be kept to manage purchases problems: for instance if the invoice doesn’t correspond to what was in your basket
- The cameras are also used to check the stock status and avoid sold out
An optimized space in a high-traffic area
- The store is located next to the Mall of Emirates metro station where it can attract hurry customers
- Moreover, the implemented technology and the 1300 references of food (organic, gluten free, cooked meals…), beverage, essentials (personal, health care…) and electronics (earphones, cables, chargers…), aim to target young generations who don’t want to waste their time during their convenience purchases
- As you can imagine, there are no cashiers but employees dedicated to security and products restock
- New stores of this type should be opened in the UAE and where Majid Al Futtaim operates
